Symptoms of a Bad Alternator
Alternators are one of the most important components of any vehicle’s electrical system. While automotive batteries get much of the attention, they’re generally only used in the initial startup of the vehicle. On the other hand, the alternator is responsible for providing the power necessary to run all of your vehicle’s crucial systems.
When the alternator is experiencing issues, you may experience a host of issues, ranging from minor electrical malfunctions to the inability to start your vehicle at all. In this article, we’ll cover the most common symptoms of a failing alternator, how this occurs, and what you can do to prevent these issues from occurring in the future.

What Is an Alternator?
The alternator acts essentially as a generator for your vehicle. Driven by the engine’s accessory belt, the alternator takes mechanical energy from your motor and converts it into electricity to be used in all of the electrically dependent systems in your vehicle.
Symptoms of a Failing Alternator
While the exact signs of a bad alternator can vary, there are some frequent symptoms to keep an eye out for.
Dim/Flickering Lights
With a faulty alternator, your vehicle likely won’t be able to generate the power it needs to keep all of your lights operating as needed. From the headlights and taillights to interior gauge lighting, alternator issues may cause these to appear dim or flickering.
Of course, dim or inoperable lights can quickly become a safety issue in dark situations. If you’re experiencing problems with your lights, especially those on the outside of the vehicle, it’s essential to have your electrical systems inspected by a trusted automotive professional to avoid any unsafe circumstances and visibility issues at night.
Difficulty Starting/Stalling
Another common issue seen with a faulty alternator is random stalling while you drive, or even the inability to start the vehicle. As the alternator is responsible for generating the power necessary to keep your engine running, you can see how reduced power delivery could cause issues with your engine’s operation.
Battery Warning Light
If your alternator is not generating adequate power, there’s a good chance you’ll see the battery warning light illuminated on your dashboard. This icon is there to let you know of any malfunctions in the electrical system, so you should have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible when this light appears to avoid further electrical issues.
Burning Smell
A less common but still noticeable symptom with a failing alternator is a burning smell emanating from the engine bay. This can be due to fried wires within the alternator itself or a slipped belt on the pulley that creates excess friction.
Either way, a burning odor from your vehicle is never a good sign and should be inspected immediately to ensure your electrical system is in proper condition and that the smell is not coming from another (potentially more dangerous) source.
